HOW PLO GELS WORK
To understand what makes PLO work, one needs to look at the composition of the skin. The outer layer of skin is called the epidermis and it consists of five layers. The stratum corneum, the outermost layer protecting the skin, when viewed under a microscope looks like a “brick wall” of flattened cells surrounded by a matrix that forms the “mortar”.
PLO gels may work by several mechanisms. One is to allow the drug to penetrate the matrix or “mortar” surrounding the “bricks”. The other is to disturb the “bricks” temporarily allowing the drug to penetrate. Either way, this special vehicle allows the drug to be absorbed in such a manner as to be effective with few side-effects.
